BACK TO REGULAR RITUALS
AMAVASYA PUJA & HAWAN In old Indian culture and beliefs, irrespective of religions, Amavasya is considered a time of great power. In religious spheres fast is observed to propitiate both the Sun and Moon Gods. In most beliefs Amavasya is not auspicious. It is the day when the evil spirits are stronger and roam freely. Black magic or dark tantra can be stronger when done in Amavasya. Diwali is considered to be the most inauspicious Amavasya. This is exactly why Gods are worshipped and lights are lit all across the house so evil spirit cannot enter the house. This is also the reason why goddess Kali is worshiped on this day. An Amavasya falling on Mondays or Somvati Amavasya has a special significance. It is believed that a fast on this particular Amavasya would ward off widow-hood in women and ensure bearing of progeny. It is also believed that all desires could be fulfilled if one fasts on this Amavasya. Lord Shiva is also worshiped in Amavasya as he controls all the evil as well as divine forces. He controls the visible as well as the invisible world. Every month, the Amavasya day is considered auspicious for the worship of forefathers. On Amavasyas, Shraadh can be done for forefathers. This puja is believed to give birth to good children without mental or physical challenges. Mahalaya Amavasya, is considered the most important day in the year for performing obsequies and rites.
